With the official debut of Rivian’s more affordable R2 approaching, we now have a better idea of what to expect as the model was reportedly spotted filming in downtown LA. Following the release of teaser images, the new R2 will be unveiled on March 7 at the flagship Laguna showroom.
Although the new model has been teased leading up to its highly anticipated debut, it has only now been revealed in full. A patent filed by Rivian last month revealed a more compact electric SUV than the R1S, with slightly smaller headlights and rear quarter panels.
The R2, although smaller, will “capture the essence” of the Rivian brand in a more compact and affordable form, starting at around $40K to $50K, a drastic reduction compared to its current R1T and R1S models, which are priced around ~$80K.
Most recently, Rivian’s R2 was reportedly spotted filming in downtown LA on Thursday. Images courtesy of Daniel Aland Getting show what appears to be the smaller Rivian R2, along with images that confirm design and size differences compared to the R1S.
Another photo shows a clear size difference between the two vehicles. The R2 will likely have smaller rear quarter panels in a more compact package. Additionally, differences in charging port location, chrome, and wheels are also noticeable.

Rivian will formally reveal the new R2 at its Laguna showroom on March 7, 2024, at 10 am PST, with the event being live-streamed.
