While the federal government cannot mandate the purchase of EVs due to lack of votes, the Biden Administration does have control over the types of vehicles the executive branch buys. The federal government is committed to continue purchasing EVs when appropriate.

However, it is essential for government agencies to have a strategic plan for charging EVs. Without proper planning, fleet vehicles may face charging issues, potentially causing disruptions for private EV owners by creating gridlocks at EV charging stations. Thus, the federal government will need to install a significant number of charging stations exclusively for federal fleet usage.

Security is a significant concern, especially given the potential for hackers or criminals to disable government vehicles connected to the internet. FedRAMP, a U.S. government initiative focused on evaluating computing and cloud products for security, is a crucial part of ensuring EV charging safety. ChargePoint, a leading EV charging infrastructure provider, has recently obtained FedRAMP certification for its cloud computing products, which will soon be available in the FedRAMP marketplace.

Teza Mukkavilli, Chief Information Security Officer of ChargePoint, expressed the company’s commitment to providing secure EV charging solutions for federal agencies, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the highest security standards and unlocking potential federal government opportunities.

Established in 2011, FedRAMP offers a risk-based approach for federal government adoption of cloud services, with a primary focus on protecting federal information. Additionally, ChargePoint holds AICPA SOC 2 certification, affirming its ability to securely manage company, customer, and driver information, as well as provide real-time visibility into data.

In addition to DC fast chargers, ChargePoint is well-known for its Level 2 charging products, a valuable asset for small fleets that require overnight charging solutions. The company’s cloud software allows for easy fleet management, providing insights into power usage and station activity.
