Motorists in California should exercise increased caution while on flooded roads due to the impending record rainfall and flooding. Despite these conditions, the Ryvid Anthem electric motorcycle successfully navigated the floodwaters with an intact ride out.

This achievement underscores the waterproof nature of electric motorcycles, even in underwater scenarios.

The Ryvid Anthem, a California-produced electric motorcycle, is remarkable for its unconventional design and the ability to make deliveries that began last year.

One of Ryvid’s unique designs includes a patent chassis and battery design. This original frame-mounted, removable battery can create visually appealing and highly practical designs, allowing riders to roll the battery inside and charge it using the built-in wheels.

The capability of underwater riding is not commonly associated with electric motorcycles compared to their internal combustion engine (ICE) relatives. However, it does offer a unique advantage in extreme weather conditions such as heavy flooding. ICE bikes would have been rendered ineffective due to engine hydrolock caused by water entering the cylinders. This contrasts with the watertight electric motorcycles, like the Ryvid Anthem, which is IP67 rated, allowing it to be submerged in water for an hour up to 1 meter (3’3″) deep. This advantage is especially beneficial in places like Asia, often plagued by flooding from monsoon rains.

Dong Tran, the founder of Ryvid, confirmed that the bike could be ridden submerged up to its handlebars. However, the handlebar-mounted display and its connectors, rated IP65, are not submersible. Therefore, it is possible to ride in water so deep that you would need to empty your gloves afterward.

While riding in extreme conditions is not recommended due to other potential risks, the waterproof design of electric motorcycles provides real-world advantages, making them a viable option in areas prone to heavy flooding. This makes it a more practical alternative to traditional motorcycles expected to endure significant damage in such situations.
