Volkswagen continues its ascent in the EV revolution. In 2023, Volkswagen’s full electric vehicle (BEV) sales increased by 21.1% compared to 2022. Overall, Volkswagen sales were up by 6.7%, highlighting the much stronger growth of BEV sales in comparison to non-BEV sales. (Note that we are referring specifically to the Volkswagen brand, not Volkswagen Group as a whole.)
In terms of volume, Volkswagen reached 394,000 BEV sales in 2023 out of a total of 4.87 million sales, indicating that 8.1% of the brand’s sales were from BEVs.
Imelda Labbé, the Volkswagen Board Member for Sales, commented, “The delivery figures show that we are on the right track as a brand and that our cars are well received by our customers.”
China, Germany, the US, the UK, Sweden, France, Norway, and Belgium were the top markets for Volkswagen BEV sales. These are also listed in order from highest to lowest sales. Labbé noted that “In Germany, for example, about 30,000 ID.4 models were delivered (+ 62.9 per cent). Volkswagen’s first fully electric ‘world car’ was also well received in the US: about 38,000 examples of the ID.4 were delivered to customers here, which corresponds to an increase of 84.2 per cent compared to 2022. The ID.3 all-electric compact car was particularly popular in China: more than 75,000 were delivered in 2023 there — a over 200 per cent increase compared to the previous year.”

Volkswagen has not only been rising in popularity with its existing models, but has also announced plans to build on its success. The company recently updated the operating systems and drive systems on the ID.4 and ID.5. Additionally, a new ID.7 Tourer — the estate version of the all-electric top model ID.7 — will debut this year. The ID.7 is known for its innovation and safety features, and we anticipate the new version to be just as impressive.
The company is also looking ahead to the release of a fully electric SUV in the high-volume A-segment, set to launch in 2026. The anticipation is building as we look forward to seeing what Volkswagen has in store for the coming years.

What lies ahead for Volkswagen in 2024? Will the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, and ID.Buzz contribute to increased sales? How will new models like the ID.2/ID.2all impact the market? As Volkswagen continues to lead the way in BEV sales, the automotive community eagerly awaits the unfolding of the company’s EV expansion through 2024 and beyond.
