Xcel Energy has announced its major solar and wind initiatives in the US Midwest. Here’s what you need to know.

Minnesota’s largest utility plans to reduce more than 80%, and possibly up to 88%, of its emissions by 2030, bringing it on track to reach Minnesota’s net-zero goal by 2040. Xcel Energy also aims to achieve its clean energy objectives in the Upper Midwest states it serves, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Michigan.

The company intends to maintain the operation of its Prairie Island and Monticello nuclear plants until the early 2050s and is set to add 3.6 gigawatts (GW) of new wind and solar energy in the Midwest. Additionally, Xcel Energy plans to incorporate 600 megawatts (MW) of battery energy storage by 2030, without disclosing the exact launch time or location for the renewable energy sources.

Furthermore, Xcel Energy will introduce 2.2 GW of “always-available resources” by 2030 for backup power during peak demand. Although the specifics of these resources have not been revealed, the company mentioned that they will be activated sparingly, contributing to minimal emissions. It reassures that all coal plants will be shut down by 2030, while tapping into the estimated $5.7 billion tax credit savings for its clean energy and battery storage expansion, aiming to keep costs low for its customers.
