An abandoned gravel pit proved to be the perfect setting for a community solar farm in Maine, as almost 90% of the state is covered in forests.
The Wishcamper Hampden solar farm, located in Hampden, was developed by the Wishcamper Companies and ReVision Energy. The $15 million, 6.77-megawatt (MW) project is estimated to produce 8,700 MWh of clean energy annually, equivalent to the power consumption of 776 homes.
This 25-acre site, once a gravel pit, has now been transformed into a thriving community solar farm. Charlie Duprey of Wishcamper described it as an ideal location for solar energy generation, hidden away from view and repurposing unused land.
Phil Coupe, a co-founder of ReVision Energy, emphasized the importance of large-scale solar projects in heavily forested states like Maine to transition away from fossil fuels.
The gravel pit solar farm will serve various off-takers, including educational institutions, power companies, and municipalities in Maine.
Maine aims to achieve 100% clean electricity by 2040.
