Instances of cheating in driving theory tests have tripled due to low pass rates and extended wait times for practical test bookings. According to recently obtained Freedom of Information data by AA Driving School, there were 1,652 reported cases of cheating in theory test centers in 2022/23, a significant increase from 568 in 2020/21.

Throughout 2022 and 2023, 625 individuals underwent investigation for theory test fraud, resulting in 46 prosecutions. The theory test comprises two components: a multiple-choice section (43 out of 50) and a hazard perception test (44 out of 75).

The questions cover various topics such as road signs, vehicle maintenance, and hazard identification to ensure candidates have a comprehensive knowledge of the Highway Code. Currently, the pass rate for the theory test stands at 45.4%.

Candidates are required to pass the theory test before booking a practical driving test. Recent analysis by AA Driving School revealed that waiting times for booking a practical test remain high, with 75% of test centers exceeding the pre-pandemic average of 6 weeks. Some centers still show waiting times of over five months.

Camilla Benitz, Managing Director of AA Driving School, expressed concern over the surge in theory test fraud reports and emphasized the importance of preparation and legal means to pass the test.

AA Driving School offers a Theory Test app with more than 700 theory questions, hazard perception clips, flashcard features for revision, offline access, timed mock tests, and progress tracking. The app is available for free download on Apple and Google Play stores.
