All US-made solar panels previously featured imported solar cells, but now two US manufacturers have signed a three-year, $400 million deal.
Canadian-headquartered Heliene, known for manufacturing solar panels in Minnesota, has joined forces with Georgia-based Suniva. Suniva’s US-made monocrystalline silicon solar cells will be incorporated into Heliene’s panels, offering “Made in the USA” panels by mid-2024 under a new strategic sourcing contract between the two companies.
These modules from Heliene will be the first crystalline solar panels with US-made solar cells. Suniva points to the growing demand from solar project owners and developers to qualify for the 10% Domestic Content Bonus Investment Tax Credit, which requires the use of US-made cells according to guidelines set by the US Department of Treasury in May 2023. This is in addition to the existing 30% IRA tax credit for renewable energy factories.
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, during her visit to Suniva’s Norcross, Georgia, facility, stated, “Prior to this Administration, solar companies nationwide were facing challenges. With the assistance of the Inflation Reduction Act tax credits, the landscape is changing for the better.”
Cristiano Amoruso, CEO of Suniva, expressed pride in fulfilling the commitment to bring back cell manufacturing to the United States at their Norcross facility.
