Tesla recently hit a significant milestone by producing its six millionth electric car, and it is believed to be a Tesla Model Y.
Announcing the achievement on its official channel, Tesla expressed gratitude to its owners and teams worldwide for their support and hard work, emphasizing the importance of their contribution. A celebratory video showcasing employees was also shared along with the announcement.
Tesla Leads the Electric Vehicle Industry
No other automaker has manufactured as many all-electric vehicles as Tesla has cumulatively. While BYD briefly outpaced Tesla in a single quarter (Q4 2023), fierce competition might see the two companies closely matched this year.
Previously, Tesla hit the five million mark on September 17, 2023, taking approximately 6.5 months to reach six million. The consistent pace suggests stability, with projections hinting at seven million by the end of 2024.
As of the end of 2023, Tesla had delivered over 5.45 million units, with the Model 3 and Model Y contributing over 4.78 million. Including Q1, the total sales for the Model 3/Model Y duo have now surpassed 5 million. Other models offered by Tesla include the Model S, Model X, and the Cybertruck, which is still in its ramp-up phase.
Despite Tesla’s dominance, other manufacturers like BYD have also achieved remarkable figures. BYD recently marked its seven millionth plug-in car sale, with the company selling around 3.5 million all-electric vehicles and 3.5 million plug-in hybrids. The gap between Tesla and BYD stands at 2.5 million units in the all-electric car category.
In Q4 2023, BYD outsold Tesla in the all-electric car segment for the first time, but Tesla is anticipated to reclaim the lead in Q1 2024. Enthusiasts eagerly await the quarterly results to see how the competition unfolds in the following weeks.
