In 2023, a total of 13.6 million plug-in electric cars were sold, representing approximately 16% of all global car sales. In this article, we will analyze the top manufacturers of rechargeable cars, based on the latest data provided by EV-Volumes shared by researcher Jose Pontes.

2023 Plug-in car sales results

2023 saw almost 13.7 million new plug-in electric car registrations globally, with nearly 9.5 million being all-electric, accounting for 11% of all cars.

We will start by examining the sales volume and market share of the top OEMs in the overall plug-in market, as well as in the battery-electric segment.

Plug-ins (BEVs + PHEVs)

The plug-in category encompasses both battery electric cars (BEV) and plug-in hybrid cars (PHEV). The top five manufacturers in 2023 were BYD Group, Tesla, Volkswagen Group, Geely-Volvo, and SAIC, accounting for over 7.5 million registrations, an increase of 41% from the previous year and representing 55% of the market share. The remaining industry accounted for over 6.1 million registrations, constituting 45% of the market share.

BYD remained the largest group with over 3 million units registered and a market share of 22%, followed by Tesla with more than 1.8 million units sold and a 13.2% market share. Together, BYD and Tesla represented 35.2% of the total plug-in market.

The third largest OEM, Volkswagen Group, registered 994,403 new plug-in cars, holding a market share of 7.3%. Geely-Volvo replaced SAIC as the fourth top OEM in the plug-in car segment, with a market share of 6.8% from 925,111 units. Other OEMs included Stellantis, BMW Group, GAC, and Hyundai Motor Group, each accounting for less than five percent market share.

Battery-Electric Vehicles (BEVs)

Regarding all-electric car registrations, Tesla continued to hold the top position with over 1.8 million registrations, amounting to a market share of 19.1%. BYD followed with 1,570,388 units and a market share of 16.5%.

The top five manufacturers were responsible for 57.5% of all BEV sales, with the remaining market share distributed among other OEMs. The total all-electric car registrations in Q1-Q4 2023 and the market share for the top 5 and others are listed below.
