Elderly drivers are the least likely among different generations to switch to electric vehicles due to their belief that the cost of ownership is unreasonable. A study found that about 90% of retirees consider EVs a waste of money and feel that more progress in production is needed before they would consider buying one.

Despite government initiatives to make it harder to buy diesel cars and increase incentives for electric vehicles, the elder generation remains unimpressed. On the other hand, millennials and Gen Z are more inclined to transition to zero-emission vehicles.

Compared to older age groups, younger drivers are more willing to give up petrol and diesel cars in the next five years. However, only 16% of those aged 65 and older are open to the idea of switching to EVs.

Michael Braybrook, country manager for electric vehicle charging manufacturer Zaptec, expressed optimism about the younger generation’s interest in EVs but acknowledged the need for more education to convince everyone to make the transition.

There are common misconceptions about EVs, including concerns about long trips, the energy grid’s capacity for more charging, as well as the availability of charging stations. Despite a notable increase in charging stations, some drivers still hesitate to switch to electric vehicles.

Many drivers believe that there should be more options available in the used market for EVs, and concerns about mileage and charging remain prominent. However, with the growing popularity of electric vehicles and improved infrastructure, the country is moving towards providing more charging stations to meet the demand.

According to Mike Hawes, CEO of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the automotive industry’s significant investment in electric vehicles is providing consumers with a wide range of options to suit their needs. He emphasized the importance of a supportive framework that promotes zero-emission mobility and ensures fair taxation to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles.
