NIO has reached a significant milestone in partnership with WeLion by commencing mass production of its 150 kWh semi-solid-state batteries in China. This development signifies a move towards utilizing safer and more energy-dense cells in NIO’s electric vehicles, expected to be integrated as early as this quarter.

NIO ($NIO) continues to thrive in the Chinese electric vehicle market and expand into new regions globally, especially in Europe. Beyond passenger EV sales, NIO is actively exploring innovations in adjacent technologies such as battery swap stations and proprietary smartphones.

An important aspect of NIO’s strategy is its investment in solid-state batteries through key manufacturers like CATL and WeLion. The introduction of a 150 kWh pack featuring semi-solid-state batteries from WeLion in the ET7 model in early 2021 was a significant step. Progress was reported in December 2023 regarding WeLion’s successful delivery of 360 Wh/kg solid-state batteries for NIO, with mass production expected by April 2024.

NIO’s celebration of the commencement of mass production of semi-solid-state batteries in April indicates progress towards achieving its ambitious goals.

NIO rolls first semi-solid-state battery off assembly line

According to a recent post by Weibo user @Delu Loves Driving, NIO has successfully produced its first 150-kWh battery pack in China. These semi-solid-state cells from WeLion have already undergone testing at battery swap stations in Shanghai and Chengdu, demonstrating their potential to significantly enhance driving range for EVs through quick swaps.

Compared to NIO’s current stations swapping 75 or 100 kWh batteries, the new semi-solid-state cells can deliver a considerable range boost to drivers within minutes.

These advanced battery packs are slated for integration into various NIO models, starting with the ET7 sedan that has achieved an impressive 1,044km (649 miles) on a single charge, with additional range to spare even at 3% capacity.

During its Q4 2023 earnings call in March, NIO confirmed plans to deploy the 150 kWh semi-solid-state battery packs in Q2 2024. With mass production now in full swing, NIO is on track to introduce this groundbreaking technology to the market, further advancing the realm of electric mobility.
