The government is taking steps to improve satnav accuracy by implementing new regulations aimed at preventing drivers from being directed down closed roads. These regulations are a key part of the government’s Plan For Drivers and involve digitising all Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs).
Temporary traffic ordinances (TROs) cover things like temporary speed limits and road closures, and were not previously automatically updated on digital systems. This meant that drivers might not be aware of road closures or temporary speed limitations because they were sometimes absent from satnav systems.
Under the new regulations, satnavs will have access to valuable information such as parking space locations. In addition, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has already incorporated the use of satnavs into the practical driving test to ensure that new drivers are trained to use them safely and correctly.
The Department for Transport released a statement emphasizing that the satnav update will guarantee that drivers have access to the most recent and accurate information. Roads minister Guy Opperman expressed the government’s commitment to making traveling by road easier for drivers, and highlighted the record investment in local road improvements as part of the Plan for Drivers.
