A recent study has revealed which regions are most prepared to meet the government’s zero-emission plans by 2035, with London being the most equipped to support electric vehicle (EV) adoption.
The study, conducted by One Sure Insurance, focused on analyzing the number of EV chargers in each area and the number of registered electric vehicles to identify the cities best prepared for the government’s guidelines.
The government has announced that manufacturers of new zero-emission cars will be required to increase production by a certain percentage each year until 2035, with 80% of all new cars sold needing to be electric by 2030.
These regulations mean that cities and towns will need to prepare for increased demand for electric charging stations, with a target for every motorway service station in England to have at least six rapid or ultra-rapid chargers by the end of 2023.
However, a recent report from the RAC via Zapmap suggested that England has fallen short of this target, with only 46 out of 119 sites meeting the requirement. Despite this, some parts of the UK are making progress in accommodating EV drivers.
The study found that London is the most prepared region to meet the 2030 goals, with 1,905 chargers per 100K registered vehicles. Scotland and the North West of England were identified as the second and third most prepared regions, respectively.
On the other hand, Northern Ireland has been named the least prepared for the transition to electric vehicles, with only 35 charging points per 100K registered vehicles on average.
The findings highlight the importance of sufficient EV charging infrastructure in cities, as it is a key factor for drivers considering switching to an electric vehicle. A representative from One Sure Insurance emphasized the need for both public charging stations and home charging solutions to support the growing EV market.
Ultimately, the study suggests that the government needs to focus on making electric vehicles a viable and accessible option for car owners, especially with the rise in electricity costs.
