At the CES show in January, Magna, the world’s largest Tier One supplier to the automotive sector, announced a new, smaller, lighter, and more efficient electric drive motor for electric vehicles. This new drive system only weighs 75 kg (165 lbs) and is up to 93% efficient in real world driving conditions, making it 20% smaller in height. It can be used for both the front and rear wheels of a vehicle and can be turned 90 degrees to improve system integration in the front and rear of the vehicle. An optional decoupling unit is also available to disconnect the unit when it is not required.
Magna has just received an order to supply its eDS Duo rear wheel drive system for the high end vehicle platform of a North American OEM. This 800-volt system can deliver up to 726 kW (973 hp) of power and 8000 NM (5900 ft-lbs) of torque, indicating the growing electrification customer base. In addition to other customers, Magna already manufactures battery housings for the GMC Hummer EV. There is indication that the customer behind this order could be Dodge, whose electric cars are speculated to feature this kind of tire smoking torque or potentially Stellantis, as they look to beef up their electric offerings. Either way, the duo will continue to roll forward another notch in terms of driving force and power generation for automobiles.
