This week, Lucid Motors revealed its expanded factory, called AMP-1 in Casa Grande, Arizona. The factory has grown from 800,000 square feet to more than 3.8 million, providing space for a new production line to manufacture the upcoming Gravity EV crossover.
While the Gravity EV crossover was the main attraction, Lucid also hinted at another exciting project during a presentation by CEO Peter Rawlinson. Rawlinson confirmed that the midsize car project, previously just a rumor, is indeed in the works. “This is very real, this isn’t some theoretical, we-might-be-working-on-something-soon,” Rawlinson said.

Lucid’s expansion plans
Lucid’s EV tech is impressive, but the startup faced an up-and-down sales year in 2023 due to cash burn. The new Gravity SUV and the upcoming midsize car are crucial for the brand’s future survival.
Expanding its lineup beyond the luxury Air sedan, which has a limited market due to its large size and high price, is crucial for Lucid. People are eager for more reasonably priced EVs in crossover form, and Lucid needs to increase its volume.
The midsize car project, set to start at $50,000, aims to address these needs and compete with vehicles like the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.
Lucid’s executive team confirmed that work on the midsize car is actively underway, with the goal of applying the learnings from the Gravity and Air to create a more mainstream, accessible product.

While no exact release date was provided by Lucid’s leadership team, an estimated timeline was hinted at. Rawlinson mentioned that it typically takes around three and a half years to develop a new car, giving insight into when we might see the midsize car hit the market.

While awaiting more details and potentially a teaser, it’s clear that Lucid’s midsize car is on the horizon, promising to bring innovation and competition to the EV market.
