Kia U.S. All-Electric Car Sales Increased 57% In January 2024

Kia America sold 51,090 vehicles in the United States in January, which is 1.7% lower than the previous year.

Even though overall sales are down, Kia’s electric car sales have soared. The company reported a 57% year-over-year increase in EV sales.

In 2023, Kia sold over 32,000 all-electric cars in the U.S. and introduced the new EV9. This model will begin production in Georgia later this year.

In January, Kia’s E-GMP-based electric car sales amounted to 2,621, a 136% increase compared to January 2022, and comprised 5.1% of total sales volume.

These figures include 1,213 EV6 (up 9%) and 1,408 EV9, which had its second full month on the market. The EV9’s sales exceeded those of the EV6, showing promising demand for the new model. Additionally, an undisclosed number of Kia Niro EVs were sold, which are combined with the ICE version, averaging around a thousand units a month.

Kia’s BEV sales in January (YOY change):

  • Total EV6/EV9 family: 2,621 (up 136%) and 5.1% share

Based on the new data, Kia’s total all-electric car sales in the U.S. for 2023 reached 32,154 units, a 12% increase year-over-year and a record for the company. It seems that 2024 holds even greater promise.

Kia’s BEV sales in 2023 (YOY change):

  • Kia EV6: 18,879 (down 8%)
  • Kia EV9: 1,118 (new)
  • Kia Niro EV: 12,157 (up 48%)
  • Total EV6/EV9 family: 19,997 (down 2%) and 2.6% share
  • Total: 32,154 (up 12%) and 4.1% share

Unfortunately, Kia does not report sales of other plug-in models, as they are combined with conventional or non-rechargeable hybrid versions.

In 2024, Kia plans to commence local production of the Kia EV9 in the U.S. at West Point, Georgia, and details about the model’s pricing and main specs can be found here.

Eric Watson, vice president of sales operations for Kia America, expressed his optimism about the company’s future, stating, “Kia’s sales continually increased over the past few years, and we’ve established a solid foundation to build upon as the industry transitions to electrified models.” Watson pointed out the success of the flagship EV9 three-row EV SUV and the increasing market share of Kia’s rugged and capable SUVs. Additionally, Kia is set to introduce six new and significantly redesigned vehicles in showrooms throughout 2024.
