Munich, Germany – Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co. Ltd. (HD KSOE) have entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on developing new applications for the electrification of marine engines and machinery using energy-efficient power semiconductor technology.

HD KSOE, a leading global shipbuilder focusing on eco-friendly decarbonized ship technology utilizing electricity and hydrogen, will partner with Infineon to create innovative power solutions for propulsion drive technology, a critical component for ship electrification. Infineon’s power semiconductors play a vital role in driving the transition towards cleaner, safer, and smarter mobility services in various modes of transportation. These semiconductors are crucial for ensuring precise control of multiple power modules, particularly in large-capacity propulsion drives for modern maritime applications.

Infineon will offer technical support and guidance to HD KSOE in semiconductor power modules and system solutions, as well as share insights on new semiconductor trends for marine applications. Through this partnership, HD KSOE aims to improve the reliability and performance of marine vessels’ propulsion drive technology, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability through ship electrification.

Maritime transport accounts for nearly 2.5 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions globally, producing approximately one billion tons of CO2 annually, according to the International Maritime Organization. The shift to electric ships is essential to mitigate the environmental impact of maritime transportation.

“We are excited to sign an MoU with Infineon to further our innovation in ship electrification technology,” said Chang Kwang-pil, Chief Technology Officer of HD KSOE. “Together, we will leverage our strengths to develop energy-efficient power solutions for CO2-friendly propulsion drives.”

“Infineon is committed to providing the technologies necessary for driving electrification in today’s transportation landscape to shape the future of mobility,” stated Dr. Peter Wawer, Division President Green Industrial Power at Infineon Technologies. “We look forward to collaborating closely with HD KSOE to develop clean, safe, and smart mobility solutions, contributing to a more sustainable marine engine ecosystem and advancing the decarbonization of shipping.”
