Hyundai Motor Group, which includes Kia and Genesis, is initiating a recall of over 147,000 EVs in the US due to potential damage in the charging units.
Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia recall EVs in the US
Following an announcement from the South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport about a recall of approximately 170,000 Hyundai and Kia EVs in Korea last week, it was anticipated that the US would be next in line.
The recall comprises nearly 114,000 models, including Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6, the Genesis GV60, GV70, and Electrified GV80, as well as Kia’s recall of 56,016 EV6 models in Korea.
The reason for the recall is a software glitch in the ICCU that could impact the battery’s power, resulting in charging issues and potential loss of power while driving.
In the US, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) initiated an investigation on June 8, 2023, following reports of ICCU power loss in 2022-2023 Hyundai IONIQ 5 models. Kia’s EV6 was also under investigation due to power loss complaints (source).

The NHTSA formally announced on Thursday that Hyundai and Kia are recalling a total of 147,110 EVs in the US. Hyundai will be recalling 98,878 EVs, including certain 2022-2024 IONIQ 5, 2023-2024 IONIQ 6, Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70, and Genesis Electrified GV80 models.
Kia will also recall 48,232 2022-2024 EV6 models. The reason for the recall is the potential damage to the ICCU leading to a failure in charging the battery.

Dealers will inspect the ICCU and replace it if necessary, in addition to providing an ICCU software update. Notification letters are expected to be sent out by May 14, 2024.
Hyundai mentioned that the enhanced ICCU software aims to reduce thermal loading and lower peak voltage during operation to prevent ICCU damage.
