A few weeks ago, the New Mexico Department of Transportation made an exciting announcement regarding NEVI charging sites. The NEVI program, part of the federal Infrastructure Bill, allocates funds to states for investing in charging infrastructure. The new stations will be strategically placed along interstate highways, usually no more than 50 miles apart and equipped with four stalls capable of simultaneously charging at least four cars at 160 kW power.
However, when New Mexico initially revealed its selection of station proposals, details were lacking. Addresses, station hardware specifications, and stall numbers were not provided. Fortunately, a friend of mine was able to obtain this information through a public records request, which he shared on Twitter.

Tesla is set to upgrade existing stations and open new ones in New Mexico. Notably, the station in Las Vegas, NM, is scheduled for a May 2025 opening. Additionally, new locations in Lordsburg, Tucumcari, and Wagon Mound will also see upgrades or new installations to enhance the charging infrastructure.
Rivian & Red E Charging Updates
Rivian’s Adventure Network did not secure funding for stations in Gallup and Albuquerque, while Red E charging won contracts for several locations in New Mexico. Stations in Santa Fe, Maxwell, and other areas will soon offer high-speed charging options for EV owners.
Upcoming Stations & Competition
New stations by Pilot Truck Stops and Francis Energy, along with EV Gateway’s installation in Las Cruces, are set to enhance electric vehicle charging infrastructure along I-40 and I-25 in New Mexico. Exciting developments are underway to meet the growing demand for EV charging options.
