One of the biggest concerns people have with e-bikes is theft. Even the cheapest ones are more expensive than the average bike, and thieves steal even the cheapest bikes all the time. When an OK e-bike costing over $1,000 and a great one for $3,000 and up (way up), they’re a huge target. It’s not unreasonable to think that thieves might target you if you’re sitting on top of an e-bike.

But I came across a video by John Hicks where he rides his Surron fast e-bike around some of the roughest parts of Compton. Despite the initial fear and sketchy situations, he managed to navigate the area safely. Here are some important lessons we can learn about bike safety from this video.

A Quick Summary

Before getting into the lessons, here’s a quick recap for those who don’t like to watch videos. Feel free to scroll to the next section if that’s not you.

He starts out pretty afraid of everything, but nothing bad happened. He gained some confidence and decided to embrace the ride. The video shows him riding through rough neighborhoods, encountering various obstacles, and putting his e-bike to the test.

Things We Can Learn About Bike Safety From This

John Hicks has experience riding in rough areas, and here are some key takeaways from his experience:

  1. Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, avoid the situation.
  2. Keep moving. Avoid situations that slow you down and make you a target.
  3. Don’t stop and engage with unfamiliar individuals.
  4. In case of an attack, use the bike as a barrier for protection.
