A new player is entering the electric vehicle (EV) market in Europe. BYD is gearing up to launch its Seal U, an electric SUV based on its popular Seal sedan, to compete with Volkswagen’s ID.4.

In September, BYD introduced its popular Seal electric sedan to European consumers. The Seal was the fifth EV model in BYD’s European lineup, following the Han, Tang, Atto 3, and Dolphin.

The Seal, a sporty sedan with Blade Batteries (82.5 kWh) and cell-to-body technology as part of BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, boasts a 354 mi (570 km) WLTP range and fast charging capabilities. It also features a standard heat pump and V2L capabilities.

Now, BYD is expanding its lineup with the launch of the Seal U, an electric SUV aimed at a key segment. The Seal U is set to rival the VW ID.4, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Skoda Enyaq.

The Seal U offers ample space for five passengers or generous cargo, boasting up to 570 liters (20 cubic feet) of trunk space that can be expanded to 1,449 liters (51 cubic feet). It is designed to compete with other electric SUVs in its class.

Despite sharing the “Seal” name, the electric SUV has little in common with its sedan counterpart, offering a more relaxed steering and chassis. The interior is designed to rival luxury brands and includes unique entertainment features like a selfie camera and karaoke microphone.

The BYD Seal U is available in two Blade Battery options – 72 or 87 kWh – offering an impressive range of up to 261 miles (420 km) or 310 miles (500 km) WLTP range, depending on the battery size.

Priced at 41,990 euros ($45,000), the Seal U is positioned to compete with the VW ID.4, which launched for 40,335 euros ($43,600) with an upgraded model offering up to 550 km (342 miles) WLTP range.

Given BYD’s recent success in the Chinese market and its reputation for innovative EV technology, the Seal U has the potential to make a significant impact in the European electric SUV market.
