Beyond Riders protective jackets are changing the game

If you enjoy my writing or videos, you’re likely aware that I have a strong affinity for two-wheeled vehicles. Whether it’s an electric motorcycle, e-bike, scooter, or any other rideable device, I’ve likely given it a try. Over the years, I’ve learned that each type of vehicle comes with its own unique personality and enjoyment, as well as its own risk profile. As motorcycle riders, we are masters at balancing risk without the protection of a car around us, which is why safety gear is crucial.

However, I’ve noticed that the perceived risk associated with different types of rides, such as e-motorcycles versus e-bikes, can impact our judgment on personal protection. This realization led me on a quest to find the right gear to address this issue.

When I’m on my motorcycles, I adhere strictly to the ATGATT doctrine (All The Gear, All The Time). You will never see me on a motorcycle without a quality full-face helmet and motorcycle-specific armored jackets and gloves. Safety is a top priority for me, and I always suit up with full armor for maximum protection.

However, I must admit that for convenience, I sometimes skip my armored riding jeans and boots in favor of casual clothing. Yet, I never compromise on wearing shorts or sandals. There’s just something about riding motorcycles that reinforces the importance of safety gear and sticking to ATGATT, or so I thought.

On the other hand, with scooters, I tend to have a more relaxed approach to safety gear. Despite riding fast machines like my Gogoro electric scooter, I’m guilty of wearing less protective gear than I should. This false sense of security has led me to opt for a 3/4 helmet or casual attire, neglecting the safety precautions I would take on a motorcycle. A recent incident while riding on a mountain road in Taiwan made me realize the importance of consistent gear regardless of the type of ride.

Electric bicycles, however, are where my safety standards seem to falter. While I always wear a bike or skate helmet, I often neglect other protective gear, opting for comfort over safety. This carelessness is something I acknowledge and aim to address.
