An AI-powered mobile technology trial conducted by National Highways is set to expand across the United Kingdom.
Ten additional police forces will join the cameras, which can automatically detect drivers not wearing seatbelts or using mobile phones while driving.
These forces will utilize the new equipment, featuring multiple cameras with different perspectives of the driver and passengers, mounted on vehicles or trailers.
The project, initially introduced in 2021, uses advanced technology to identify drivers engaging in risky behavior.
After processing, the data is sent to the police, who notify the driver through warning letters about the dangers of their actions.
Research shows that using a mobile phone while driving increases the risk of accidents by four times. Not wearing a seatbelt doubles the risk of fatal injuries in accidents.
The police forces involved in the trial include Durham, Greater Manchester Police, Humberside, Staffordshire, West Mercia, Northamptonshire, Wiltshire, Norfolk, Thames Valley Police, and Sussex.
Running from February 19 to March 2025, the study is conducted in collaboration with AECOM.
Future plans include installing the technology on gantries for better surveillance of all lanes, although a specific date for this implementation is yet to be announced.
The police receive photos captured by the AI cameras to decide on necessary action.
In addition to penalty points, drivers caught violating regulations may face fines of up to £500 for not wearing seatbelts and up to £1,000 for using a mobile phone while driving, along with six penalty points on their license.
Matt Staton, National Highways Head of National Road User Safety Delivery, stated, “Distracted driving and lack of seatbelt usage were significant factors in many incidents leading to fatalities or serious injuries.
By collaborating with law enforcement, we aim to curb dangerous driving behaviors and minimize risks to drivers and others. Implementing technology like this aims to prompt individuals to seriously reconsider their driving habits.
We are committed to investing in technology that enhances the safety of all road users, ensuring everyone gets home safely.
