Toyota Motor North America, representing Toyota and Lexus brands, reported a 20% year-over-year increase in vehicle sales in the United States for the first quarter of 2024, reaching a total of 565,098 units.
The company has been rapidly expanding the sales of electrified vehicles, including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electric, and fuel cell electric vehicles. With a lineup that now includes 27 models, Toyota is making significant strides towards its electrification goals.
Toyota accelerates electrification
In 2023, Toyota (including Lexus) made a total of over 54,000 plug-in electric car sales in the U.S.—comprising 14,715 all-electric and nearly 40,000 plug-in hybrids, setting a new sales record.
During Q1, Toyota’s total electrified vehicle (xEV) sales reached a new record of 206,850 vehicles, representing a 74% year-over-year increase and accounting for 36.6% of the total sales volume.
Breakdown of xEV sales in Q1’2024:
- Toyota xEV: 177,778 units (up 76%) – 36.5% share
- Lexus xEV: 29,072 units (up 61%) – 37% share
- Total xEV: 206,850 units (up 74%) – 36.6% share
Furthermore, plug-in car sales surged even more in Q1 2024, with the Toyota group selling 17,832 plug-in electric cars—registering a 94% increase compared to the previous year and making up 3.2% of the total sales volume.
Breakdown of plug-in car sales in Q1’2024:
- Toyota plug-ins: 13,571 units (up 67%) – 2.8% share (BEVs: 1,897 units; PHEVs: 11,674 units)
- Lexus plug-ins: 4,261 units (up 272%) – 5.4% share (BEVs: 1,603 units; PHEVs: 2,658 units)
- Total plug-ins: 17,832 units (up 93%) – 3.2% share (BEVs: 3,500 units; PHEVs: 14,332 units)
However, sales of all-electric cars also grew by 86% year-over-year to reach 3,500 units in Q1 2024, though this segment continues to represent a small 0.6% share of the total sales volume.
Models
The top models in Q1 were the plug-in hybrid RAV4 Prime (7,767 units) and the new Toyota Prius Prime (3,907 units). The all-electric Toyota bZ4X and Lexus RZ also made notable sales figures.
