Learning how to drive and purchasing a car can be a significant financial commitment, especially during a period of rising living costs. Despite this, new vehicle registrations saw an 18.2% increase in 2023 compared to the previous year.

Uswitch car insurance conducted a survey to explore the main motivations behind new drivers learning to drive and the factors they considered before buying their first car.

Reasons new drivers attain their license

Reason Percentage of respondents
Independence 35%
Travel flexibility 22%
I had to learn for my job 11%
As an alternative to public transport 11%

The primary reasons for new drivers attaining their license are independence (35%) and travel flexibility (22%). Given that more than 1 in 6 jobs in the UK require a driving license, it is understandable that 11% of new drivers learn to drive for work purposes.

Although independence is the main motivation for new drivers, the survey indicated that the majority of them cannot afford the financial commitment of purchasing a car on their own. 37% of respondents received assistance from their family, either through monetary gifts or by being given a car.

The survey also highlighted that many first-time drivers are unaware of the additional costs associated with car ownership, some of which are mandatory by law.

Outlined below are some key costs that new drivers were found to be unaware of:

  • Fuel: 27% of new drivers overlook the cost of fuel when buying a car, despite independence being a primary reason for learning to drive.
  • MOT: 36% of new drivers are unaware of MOT expenses, risking fines of up to £1,000.
  • Breakdown cover: Over half (54%) of new drivers are unaware of the need for breakdown cover.
  • Car tax: 38% of new drivers are unfamiliar with car tax expenses.
  • Car insurance: 25% of new drivers do not realize that car insurance is mandatory, with premiums being higher for inexperienced drivers.

Uswitch car insurance expert, Leoni Moninska, shares valuable advice on considerations before becoming a car owner:

  • “Accounting for additional costs: It’s crucial to be aware of all expenses related to owning a car and to budget accordingly.

    – Running costs like fuel, insurance, and car tax are unavoidable and must be factored into your budget.

    – Plan for potential maintenance and repair costs by setting aside extra funds.

  • “Deciding where to store your car: The storage location can impact insurance costs, vehicle safety, and parking expenses.

    – Driveways are typically the best option for parking.

    – Garage parking may not lower insurance rates. Parking on the street may require a permit, depending on local regulations.”
