Mercedes-Benz is planning to establish a minimum of 400 charging hubs across North America by 2030. CleanTechnica has already covered the launch of the Atlanta-area hub, with more hubs like it on the way. While some critics have expressed concerns about range anxiety, the focus is now shifting towards enhancing the EV charging experience.
Mercedes intends to create EV charging hubs that are convenient, secure, clean, reliable, and fast.
Andrew Cornelia, CEO of Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging, shared insights on the new charging hubs with CleanTechnica.
How are you ensuring an upscale charging experience for all EV drivers nationwide? Are you following the North American Charging Standard?
At Mercedes-Benz, customer experience is the top priority.
Accessible and reliable EV charging infrastructure is crucial for EV adoption. Recognizing a significant gap in the current market offerings, we have taken proactive steps to elevate the overall charging experience for all drivers. Placing drivers at the center of the EV transition is paramount to us. Our focus is on providing EV drivers seamless access to dependable charging infrastructure.
This entails ensuring the availability of public amenities near our charging hubs, allowing customers to relax, grab refreshments, and utilize facilities while charging. We maintain high standards for quality, reliability, and availability to minimize downtime. Safety measures, including video surveillance, enhance the overall charging experience. Aligning our charging hubs with our brand identity ensures all drivers receive a world-class experience. Our commitment to inclusivity means the Mercedes-Benz brand welcomes all EV drivers from day one.
Mercedes-Benz has partnered with Simon Property Group to deploy over 50 high-powered charging stations at Simon locations in the US by 2027. Simon is renowned for its upscale retail destinations, providing value to EV drivers through high-quality amenities.
Starting this summer, we will be adopting the North American Charging Standard (NACS) across our infrastructure. This ensures Mercedes-Benz EV drivers have access to Superchargers through an adapter, while Tesla DC chargers seamlessly integrate into our ecosystem. By 2025, the first Mercedes-Benz vehicle will come equipped with the physical NACS plug, further solidifying our commitment to offering convenient and efficient charging solutions for EV owners.
Will all the new charging hubs be powered by clean energy?
Yes, all Mercedes-Benz charging hubs operate on 100% clean energy sources.
Currently, our chargers can deliver charging rates of up to 400 kW, offering some of the fastest speeds in the industry.
Ensuring a seamless charging experience for all EV drivers remains our top priority. Our goal is to establish a comprehensive charging network that prioritizes convenience and efficiency for all drivers, thereby accelerating the widespread adoption of EVs.
Will all the new charging hubs be located in safe, well-lit areas?
Yes, safety is paramount in our location selection process. We carefully evaluate environmental conditions and work with site partners to install security surveillance and ample lighting at all locations. Through partnerships with businesses like Simon Properties and Buc-ee’s, we ensure drivers have access to secure charging in high-traffic areas.
How will you determine the cost per kWh at each charging hub?
Energy prices at each charging hub will be determined considering various factors such as state regulations and utility tariffs. Our pricing strategy aims to make the Mercedes-Benz charging experience affordable for all EV drivers in each market.
Will there be a charging points program for major credit cards at your charging hubs?
All our charging hubs accept major credit cards for easy and contactless payments. EV drivers can earn points through existing points programs offered by many credit card companies.
Will any of the charging hubs utilize solar power systems?
Yes, select charging hubs will feature solar panels to generate electricity for the facilities. Solar canopies will provide clean electricity, weather protection, and overhead lighting for customer safety.
We have launched our first hub in Sandy Springs, Georgia, featuring a solar canopy as part of our commitment to providing a premium charging experience.
Will any of your new charging hubs be located at established businesses frequented by travelers such as hotels?
Yes, our goal is to offer a convenient and seamless charging experience where EV drivers naturally frequent. We are partnering with leading businesses like Buc-ee’s and Simon to establish charging hubs at established locations along major transit corridors.
Mercedes-Benz HPC North America LLC, in partnership with MN8 Energy, is installing charging hubs at 31 Buc-ee’s travel centers, aiming to create a nationwide charging network focused on convenience and quality.
