When it comes to visiting the most popular national parks in the country, EV drivers usually have it easy. The South Rim of the Grand Canyon offers both Tesla and CCS charging right outside of the park, while Great Smoky Mountains National Park is also well-served and improving. However, when venturing to less popular national parks, monuments, and state parks, especially on backroads, the charging challenge becomes much harder. In some cases, there are no charging options available unless you bring along a mobile charger and plug it in at an RV park. This underscores the importance of expanding EV charging infrastructure to ensure access to our national and state treasures.

This article highlights the positive news for two parks in New Mexico, one national and one state, that are now more accessible thanks to new charging stations.

White Sands National Park Now Has 24-Hour Charging Available Nearby

Alamogordo, New Mexico, just a few miles outside of White Sands National Park, serves as a popular place for out-of-state visitors to stay. However, the park itself lacks any EV charging infrastructure. Recently, a two-stall charging station open 24 hours was installed at the local Allsups station, offering faster charging options for travelers heading to the park. Additionally, plans for a Tesla Magic Dock station in Alamogordo are underway, providing even more charging opportunities for both the town and travelers.

Pancho Villa State Park

In 1916, the United States experienced a significant event related to Pancho Villa’s attack on Columbus, New Mexico, due to some complex historical dynamics. As a result, decades later, part of the area where the battle took place was designated as Pancho Villa State Park in New Mexico. This state park now features an outdoor museum, antique military vehicles, and a new ChargePoint station that recently opened nearby. The station, although still undergoing some setup, provides EV drivers with a convenient charging option to explore the area and offers access to another back road and stunning night sky views along Highway 9.
