True extended-range electric vehicles with combustion engines that never directly power the wheels are rare. Before you scroll past this entire article straight to the comments section, note that the Chevrolet Volt isn’t considered one because its engine is occasionally connected to drive the wheels. However, the recently unveiled 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger is an EREV that grabs attention with its V6 engine and smaller battery, appealing to a wider audience than the pure-electric Ram 1500 REV. The Ramcharger is also a great option for towing.

Mazda has also entered this space with a real extended-range EV in the form of the MX-30 R-EV. During my time driving it, I formed strong opinions about its performance. The MX-30 R-EV boasts a unique interior with cork details and a striking appearance, making it an intriguing option. The R-EV has a smaller battery but compensates with a rotary range extender, offering a combined electric and combustion engine powertrain. Although the extended-range version is not planned for release in the US, it delivers an impressive range of up to 423 miles on the WLTP cycle in Europe.

While the MX-30 R-EV boasts impressive features and design, its limitations were evident with the pure BEV version. The vehicle’s range fell short of expectations, with the extended-range variant proving to be a more practical choice. The R-EV’s unique powertrain setup and driving modes offer a dynamic driving experience, without compromising on efficiency and performance.

The MX-30 RE-V features an innovative powertrain setup that distinguishes it from traditional hybrids or EVs. With its distinctive driving modes and rotary range extender, the MX-30 R-EV delivers a compelling driving experience, blending electric and combustion power seamlessly for an efficient and versatile ride.
